Board Update September 24, 2021
Like us, many of you in hearing of our three September limited in-person gatherings and the positive direction of early summer, hoped we were on our way to a re-opening of SSUC that could culminate in gathering in a way that felt like ‘normal’. Unfortunately, this virus has proven to have other plans throughout this pandemic.
With heavy hearts, the SSUC Re-Opening Task Group and the Board announce the decision to pause our in-person gatherings, effective immediately. We do not make this decision lightly. Unfortunately, the increase in COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations and individuals requiring intensive care in Alberta in general and Edmonton in particular are cause for concern. These higher-than-ever numbers pose a risk and concern even to those among us who are fully vaccinated, to those interacting with children under 12, and to families who already have anxiety in juggling school and children’s activities. It’s with the care for our entire SSUC community that we pause until such time as the Re-Opening Task Group deems it safer to return to in-person gatherings.
We know that this news might be disappointing to you. We are all missing our vivacious in-person community and we’re disappointed by the need to make this decision. Our primary goal remains the safety of our congregation. Through it all, we have found ways to be in community safely and will continue to make meaningful connections in online zoom connections, outdoor events when possible, and our livestreamed Sunday gatherings. We are grateful for the ongoing leadership and support of our ministry, music, and tech teams and know that we will all be safer in the interim as we join each other virtually.
The Re-Opening Task Group has committed to assessing the situation every two weeks for the coming period so that we can be responsive and make recommendations based on the most current data and health information. We will continue to keep you updated on our plans for in-person gatherings as the situation evolves.
We miss you and look forward with hope,
The Re-Opening Task Group and SSUC Board
